1966 el camino inner fender youtube12/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Never gets old, which is an accomplishment in itself, considering his composition style. Usually a bit clearer and synth-driven, Steve's choice of guitar (with an astonishing array of effects) for his palette give it a very dark, murky stillness - this is the reason this one wins out over his more critically-acclaimed efforts like Structures from Silence. Steve Roach - Midnight Moon: The deep end of new age music is Steve Roach's territory. Led Zeppelin - III/Houses of the Holy (either one, really): Both albums have the diversity, the knack for being succinct or epic when needed, and IMO were the creative peaks for the band as a collective. Toccata is in a league of its own and, while it was about as experimental as they got, it was a hell of a crest. That, and part 1 is a well-chopped idea blender placed in the sweet-spot of the tracklisting. Karn Evil 9 is so ridiculously overblown that it deserves props. Floyd's best by faaaaar.ĮLP - Brain Salad Surgery: turned me into a prog nerd. As it is, side 1 is just as solid as Echoes. Pink Floyd - Meddle: If side 1 were even half as solid as Echoes (my first foray into prog rock, and still memorable and retains its transportative properties 15 years later), it would be on this list. Takes the level of musicianship up another impossible notch. Even after hearing the album a zillion times, I still find new musical ideas, layers and structure to what seems to be a chaotic mess in Gates of Delirium and Sound Chaser. Yes - Relayer: Sound painting at its' finest. ![]() Great musicianship in the title cut and the other two songs. Yes - Close to the Edge: I consider the title track to be the best song ever, and far more impressive than most prog sidelongs of the time because it's not just a bunch of ideas thrown together, it's actually a pop "song", with the verse/choruses (and the "bridge" I Get Up I Get Down) extended dramatically. ![]() (EDIT - since everyone else is putting their reasons why these albums so will I.)
